On the drug-infested streets of West Baltimore, there are good guys and there are bad guys. Sometimes you need more than a badge to tell them apart. From HBO comes Season 1 of this highly realistic drama series that follows a single sprawling drug and murder investigation in Baltimore — one that culminates in a complex series of dangerous wiretaps and surveillance. Told from the points of view of both the police and their targets, the series captures a universe where easy distinctions between good and evil, and crime and punishment, are challenged at every turn. The ensemble cast includes Dominic West, John Doman, Idris Elba, Frankie R. Faison, Larry Gilliard Jr., Wood Harris, Domenick Lombardozzi, Deirdre Lovejoy, Wendell Pierce, Lance Reddick, Andre Royo, and Sonja Sohn.

  • The greatest, most ambitious television series of all time.

    By ColinJames
Nothing has ever attempted the scope and scale of THE WIRE. It's a peerless work in television that begins as 'merely' a densely detailed show about cops and drug dealers, but expands to be a grand examination of an embattled city and the forces that run it, from every aspect of society. While the show is not always perfect it's still far richer, better-executed and engrossing piece of epic sotrytelling than has ever been done in a filmed format.
  • Incredible

First recommended to me by a friend. Pitched as a cop drama I had little incenive to watch. However, after the first few episodes I was hooked. This is so much more than a police drama. It really gets to grips with some meaty issues and lacks any of the make-up and glamour applied to other series of its kind.
  • Great TV series

The best drama keeps you guessing what's going to happen. The plot needs twists and turns and well developed characters that are different from the typical stereotypes. This show has it all.
  • Probably the best TV show ever made

This is an absolutely brilliant show, but you need to have some patience, as the first few episodes are really setting up the story. This series has everything: realism, great characters, great dialogue, brilliant storytelling and it will make you think about the state of our society. At first, it's just a crime show, but in the next four seasons it delves into the docks, the schools, the politics and the newspapers of Baltimore.
  • The only disappointment is that its over

As a very critical and hard to please individual, I tend to struggle to find any TV series that are worth watching. The Wire was a major exception. The manner in which the show is filmed and the multilayered storyline seem to suck you in to a point where you feel like you are there. The notice taken to detail colloquialisms and nuances of the key and second tier characters made it so easy to feel like you really knew the characters. I could not stop watching once I started in the same way one can be gripped by an excellent book. Best series I have ever seen hands down.
  • Unsurpassed

Without question, one of the greatest drama series of all time. Not only from a dramatic standpoint, but for the balanced social commentary. This show is truly authentic (some of the 'actors' are real-life criminals) and the plot lines are intricately wrought, with seemingly throw away lines returning as major events in later seasons. Watch. This. Show.
  • An Excellent Piece of Television

This show has gained large amounts of critical acclaim and for good reason. It is well shot, well paced and the story is tightly written. The characters are made believable by stunning performances all round. If you haven't already seen The Wire, it would come with my reccomendation that you purchase the starter pack episodes immediately. You will not regret it.

  • The Wire

Do yourself a favour and watch this show. No big stars, no gloss, just gritty drama based on true events that took place in Baltimore( the Wire's creator worked as a journalist in Baltimore for a time) Politics is a major theme throughout and very cleverly shows how individuals are striving to succeed in the criminal world and the police. Hat's off HBO you have done it again!!!
  • Brilliant

More like a novel or a tapestry than a TV show, The Wire is rich in complexity, depth of character and moral shades of grey. Watching this series is entertaining, but it also opens your eyes to a segment of inner city life in the USA that many of us would never be exposed to. Quite possibly the best television i've seen.
